How I tried to learn Spanish - a language learning app review

2020.12.16

One of my huge amount of tasks was in this semester that we had to choose a foreign language to start learn and to use a learning app for this reason. We had to deal with the new language for 5-10 minutes a day. So I started my Spanish lessons with Busuu. It is a language learning application that puts the emphasis mostly on everyday communication, teaches sentences, dialogues of situations we can face with in our real life. This is the feature why I picked this app because it offers usable language knowledge that is the main goal of many language learners. The application offers 12 languages to learn. Every language has got its own webpage and a Podcast is started recently with 4 entries so far.

The basic version of Busuu is free but registering an account is required. There are some lessons that are locked in the free version. In my experience, the locked parts are mainly grammatical explanations which you can find on the Internet easily or some extra exercises. The premium account gives a seven-day money-back guarantee so you can try out the paid version to see if it would be suitable for your learning style. Once you purchase this version, the locked parts of the lessons, offline lessons and extra practice exercises will be accessible. The app opens the door to develop our speaking skills by a speech recognition tool which with we can practice the language out loud. Another great characteristic of Busuu is the possibility of the users to help each other and get feedback.

After you created your account, you can choose between levels from A1 to B2. You can make a choice according to your interest e.g. : business, travelling, culture. If you give the information that how many minutes are you going to be able to learn each day, how many days will you have time a week to learn and the desired level the application can estimate the approximate date by then you will have reached your goals. If I keep going on using the app 10 minutes each day I will be on B2 level for November, 2021.

I really enjoyed learning with Busuu and I am sure that I will use this app in the future to continue either my Spanish lessons or I will use its lessons in class. The content is up-to-date, relevant to our life and is filled with phrases we can actually use when speaking to someone. Busuu also offers tons of interesting cultural tips that help learning when to use a particular phrase, when to say something and how to use a word, a phrase, a sentence appropriately. So this application is entertaining, interactive and can keeps you motivated and if you purchase the Premium version you can talk with native speakers in your target language. I highly recommend this app both for language learners and language teachers however currently I haven't got any time (even 5 minutes daily) and free brain capacity to continue learning a new language. Overall, I consider Busuu is a must-have language learning application.
